Universal spokesman Tom Schroder acknowledged that the resort had reached out to homeowners associations about Skyplex. He accused the theme park company of “trying to line up community opposition that isn’t there.” Skyplex developer Josh Wallack noted that Universal had been in touch with another homeowners group, Spring Lake Villas, about the project as well. McReynolds pointed to a letter that the Orange Tree neighborhood had written in opposition to the project. A city of Orlando official also weighed in, urging caution, and a nearby business owner spoke in support of the project. An I-Drive business group called Efficient Transportation for the Community of Central Florida, of which McReynolds is an officer, also spoke against the height. Of six people speaking about the project, three were representing Universal. A rebuttal from Skyplex included a slide labeling Universal as a “bully” and accusing the theme-park company of “hypocrisy.” Wallack said Universal officials were trying to delay his $500 million project. “It’s simply because they don’t want us to have the world’s tallest roller coaster which will draw people to it,” said Wallack, adding a video simulation of the roller coaster has amassed more than 750 million views since it was posted online in November. Wallack and his attorney Hal Kantor argue that the appeal of the project lies in its height - the world’s tallest roller coaster. Universal, located near residential neighborhoods, is only allowed to build up to 200 feet. McReynolds urged county officials to approve the project, but to impose a height limit, saying the project needs to fit in with the community and could impact life of neighborhoods around the district. “This is not a competitive issue,” he said. It is an absolute cutting-edge engineering marvel that will deliver pure adrenaline unlike any roller coaster in the world today.John McReynolds, Universal’s head of external communications, focused on that concern Thursday.
